Heather Martin is a student in Barrett, the Honors College at ASU. She is a National Merit Scholar and received the New American University Scholarship and the ISS International Switching Symposium Endowed Scholarship. She has been on the Dean’s List every semester and was part of the Grand Challenge Scholars Program and both Engineering Projects in Community Service Gold and Maroon.
What was your biggest achievement in the Grand Challenges Scholar Program?
My participation in that program lead me to help found the Grand Challenge Scholars Alliance, within which I acted initially as a secretary but soon became president. My biggest accomplishment with the GCSA was coordinating with the Phoenix Children’s Hospital to establish a working relationship which allowed for my organization’s members to volunteer on a monthly basis by leading a STEM related activity during patients’ therapy time. Volunteering there has really impacted my experience as a student here. I love seeing the kids have fun and helping them open up to new friends and get excited about cool engineering activities.
What was a memorable moment at ASU for you?
I remember at E2 camp, on the last day Paul Johnson, former dean of the Fulton Schools, was throwing a few shirts out to all the new students. I caught one and it says “future fulton engineering alumni” on the front. It’s a fun memory for me, and whenever I’d get stressed out or feel buried alive in homework, I would pull out that T-shirt and sort of feel “predestined” to graduate from the program. It helped me stay motivated!
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduating, I plan on attending Georgetown Law starting next fall. For the break time in between, I plan to find an engineering job when I get back to the Washington, D.C. area, probably after Christmas sometime.
