Arizona State University engineering professor Christiana Honsberg recently was presented the Outstanding Faculty Award for 2014 by the Phoenix Section of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).

IEEE, an association dedicated to advancing innovation and technological excellence for the benefit of humanity, is the world’s largest technical professional society.

The award recognizes Honsberg’s contributions as a university faculty member working to develop a more sustainable future by making advances in the performance of solar energy systems.

Honsberg is a professor in the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering, one of ASU’s Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering.

She is a pioneer in advancing the photovoltaic technologies used to produce power from solar energy, and is well regarded as an effective and motivational classroom lecturer. She leads the development of new courses, contributes to the design of new engineering curricula, and advances the practice of teaching by adapting new tools or pedagogical approaches to engineering.

In addition, Honsberg has developed both undergraduate and graduate degree programs in photovoltaics and renewable energy, including the first undergraduate degree program in solar energy.

She also developed the first sustainable energy education program for the NSF Integrative Graduate Education Research and Training (IGERT) program, and is the author of the widely used electronic textbook “Photovoltaics: Devices, Systems and Applications.”

Honsberg is director of the Engineering Research Center for Quantum Energy and Sustainable Solar Technologies (QESST ERC), which is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and is the chief scientist of the Solar Power Laboratory at ASU.  The QESST ERC works to harness solar energy in more efficient, cost-effective and sustainable ways.
