Retooling introductory courses

From their first day on campus, we want Fulton Engineering students to experience the excitement that brought them to engineering through hands-on, experiential projects and innovative curriculum that not only prepares them to be engineers in the future, but inspires them to further develop their creative, problem-solving skills today.

The Fulton Experience begins with a unique engineering orientation at E2 Camp. As freshmen, our students take Introduction to Engineering (FSE 100). Working in teams, students in FSE 100 are introduced to the profession as they learn the engineering design process, engineering models and critical communication skills.

Providing experiential opportunities

In addition to E2 Camp and FSE 100, there are many opportunities for hands-on engineering experiences for Fulton undergraduates, including Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) and the Fulton Undergraduate Research Initiative (FURI). Participation in student clubs, professional societies and competitive teams also provide numerous opportunities to imagine, plan and build engineering solutions.  Our engineering students complete their experience with a senior design class. During this capstone class, students bring the knowledge and skills gained during their undergraduate experience to bear on actual design problems. Many capstone projects are done in conjunction with ASU professors and industry partners to create equipment and solutions that solve an immediate need. We are working to create an intermediate design class that sits between the freshman and senior classes. This intermediate class would provide our students with another valuable opportunity to put their growing skill set to work.

Throughout the Fulton Experience, students are immersed in degree programs that provide a strong disciplinary foundation and cross-disciplinary thematic focus opportunities like energy, sustainability and health. Coupled with experiential opportunities, our goal is to provide an educational experience that leads to graduates who are uniquely prepared for a diverse range of careers and are highly attractive to employers.
