Originally from Sonora, Mexico
Alex Camalich Martinez was on the ASU Programming and Activities Board. He collaborated with student clubs, student organizations, University Housing and the Polytechnic school to create events for students. He loves to skateboard and create music.
Why did you choose ASU?
ASU is close to my family and friends, and it has great aviation programs.
When my father passed away during my years in high school, it greatly impacted me. He was a pilot who flew for Aeromexico airline and always wanted me to become a pilot. I researched opportunities in the aviation industry and came up with Air Traffic Control. I decided to give that a shot and ended up loving it! I am dedicating my degree to him and my family.
What was a memorable moment at ASU for you?
I do not have a particular moment, but I definitely cherish the people I met and the experiences I took part in. I am also grateful for figuring out who I am and the lives I was able to touch in spite of the struggles and challenges I’ve faced.
Can you name a professor that was instrumental in helping you grow?
Many professors impacted my career and professional development. Lecturer Verne Latham showed me more discipline in the field of air traffic control; Associate Professor Mary Niemczyk was very informative and educational in my capstone and aviation management classes; and finally, Clinical Associate Professor Michael Pearson showed me that a 25-page paper is not so scary!
What are your plans after graduation?
I currently work two part-time jobs; I am an Operations Agent for American Airlines at Phoenix Sky Harbor and I am also an Agent in Operations for Phoenix-Mesa Gateway airport. Although the titles are similar, the job duties and responsibilities are completely different. I plan on continuing my employment with both to expand my experience within Operations for an airline and for an airport.
