Samantha Aguirre

Udall scholars seek to make a differenceTwo ASU engineering students were among 80 students nationally to win Udall Scholarships. Named for former Arizona congressman, Morris K. Udall, the scholarships are awarded to sophomores and juniors who plan careers in healthcare, public policy and tribal policy. Samantha Aguirre, biomedical engineering, is pursuing a career in dentistry, focusing specifically on dental care and educating patients in clinics on the Native American reservation.

John Kondziolka

John Kondziolka, civil, environmental and sustainable engineering, is already applying his research related to water resources both locally and through Engineers Without Borders, traveling to Ecuador and Kenya to assess systems and help impart knowledge.

Michelle “Mickey” Mancenido

Outstanding International Graduate StudentIndustrial engineering doctoral student Michelle “Mickey” Mancenido, a native of the Philippines, was the 2011 winner of the Outstanding International Graduate Student Award presented by ASU’s International Students and Scholars Office. Michelle is a faculty member on leave from the University of the Philippines, where she began teaching several years ago. Mancenido says she hopes to eventually help lead her country to the forefront of advances in the field.
