Patrick Herrington – Outstanding Graduate

Patrick Herrington
B.S.E. in Engineering Management
Graduated from Stratford High School in Goose Creek, South Carolina
Originally from Oakland, California

Patrick Herrington completed his degree online, was on the Dean’s List multiple times and works full time as a manager of the Backbone Architecture team at eBay.

Why did you choose to come to ASU?
I was looking for an online degree program in something that fit my career goals and fit around my work schedule. I manage the Backbone Architecture team at eBay, so the ASU Online Engineering Management program fit perfectly.

What led you to choose to study engineering and to decide on the specific major you chose?
I like the problem solving in engineering. The mix of classes that make up the Engineering Management degree let me stay technical while learning about core business principles like accounting and finance. The most rewarding thing about my undergraduate degree was to complete it while still keeping up with my responsibilities at work and at home. The flexibility of the program, while still maintaining a structure of due dates for assignments, kept me on track without being too restrictive.

Can you name a professor who was particularly instrumental in helping you grow as a student? Professor of Practice Dan McCarville was very helpful to me in getting an attachment to ASU.  It’s hard as an online student sometimes to make a connection to the school, but working with him on the senior project, and sharing my project with on-campus students, really improved my experience at ASU.

What are your long-term career aspirations?
I would like to continue expanding the eBay network, making eBay Marketplaces, and the other eBay companies, faster for users. My classwork has taught me new ways to manage my team, and new ways to improve processes to make things better for our customers.
