Ever since winning the Microsoft U.S. Imagine Cup student technology competition earlier this year, Team FlashFood has been gaining more widespread attention for its idea to help alleviate hunger.

The project emerged in part from the Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) program in Arizona State University’s Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering.

The team has developed a mobile-phone application designed to maintain communications for a food-recovery network that would collect leftover food from restaurants, caterers and banquet halls and deliver it fresh to people in need.

The concept drew increasing interest this summer during the team’s participation in the Imagine Cup World Finals competition in Australia. The FlashFood project is being lauded as a particularly creative example of social entrepreneurship – using technological advancements and business acumen to help solve society’s challenges.
